We use the Windows Operating System every day. But do you know what the system directory is? This article will tell you what the system directory is in Win 9.x Win ME Win 2000. And this article includes how to use the system directory and the function of the system directory.

The system directory is a place where the Operating System stored its main files. These files in system directory will influence the environment of Operating System. To know these directories will make you better using the Operating System. The system directory is under the Windows directory in Windows 9.x/ME, and it is under the Winnt directory in Windows 2000.

All Users directory:
[Win 9.x/ME] All Users directory includes the desktop files and start files when you log in the Operating System by Default.
[Win 2000] There isn't such a directory in Windows 2000. The users' information is stored in Documents and Setting directory under the root directory in Windows 2000. Each user corresponds with a directory which includes the start menu, desktop, My Favorite, My Document etc.

Application Data directory:
[Win 9.x/ME] Application Data directory includes the shortcut and input way etc. According to the different software in your OS, it will show the different content in that directory.
[Win 2000] Under the Documents and Setting directory, each user holds an Application Data directory. According to the different software, the directory will show the different content.

Applog directory:
 [Win 9.x/ME] That means Application Logical directory. Logical document is used for recording the using address and the file which need to transfer. They couldn't be opened with notepad.

Catroot directory:
[Win 9.x] That means the booting test information directory. This directory includes the hardware and software test information when computer was booted.
[Win ME] This directory was stored in System catalog of system directory.
[Win 2000] This directory was stored in System32 catalog of system directory.
   
Command directory:
[Win 9.x/ME] This is command directory for DOS. It includes a lot of DOS commands. These commands were very useful in DOS. And when the Operating System crashed, it is also very useful.
[Win 2000] This DOS command was stored in System32 catalog of system directory.
  
Config directory:
[Win 9.x/ME/2000] This is a configuration files directory. It includes some defining files of MIDI musical instrument.
